Edible Selby book signing at ABC

edible-selby1
Todd Selby was already well known for his website The Selby, for which he photographs extraordinary people and the extraordinary worlds they inhabit. Then came his first book, ‘The Selby is In Your Place’ (2010), which focused specifically on the (sometimes outrageous) homes of his creative subjects.

For his second book, Todd Selby traveled around the globe again, photographing and interviewing people whose lives are centered around food in some way. Among these are a rooftop farmer in Brooklyn, a salmon smoker in Norway and a pizza maker in Tokyo. Accompanied by handwritten questionnaires and watercolor illustrations, the result is both beautiful and quirky, and will appeal to photography fans and foodies alike.edible-selby-taco
The book is available now, but for those who live in Amsterdam and want to buy a book AND get it signed by Mr. Selby himself at the same time, you’re in luck: The American Book Center is hosting a signing session on November 1st at 19:00 on Spui 12 in Amsterdam.

Herb Ritts - L.A. Style

herb-ritts
While I was on the West Coast last July, I went to see ‘L.A. Style’: an exposition of the late photographer Herb Ritts’ work, at the J. Paul Getty Museum. What I noticed is that although I didn’t know Ritts, I definitely knew his work. I think everyone who was alive during the 80’s and 90’s has seen his celebrity portraits, his advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein and Armani, and music videos for the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson, to name a few.

Madonna’s Cherish. Also view a short documentary on YouTube.

Ritts’ work was inspired by architecture and the classical nude, and his style was quintessential L.A., often using the natural Californian light and landscape. Once your attention is drawn to this distinctive style, you realize how much of Ritts’ amazing work you actually already know.

Herb Ritts was HIV positive. He died almost ten years ago, in December of 2002.

Blog Love: The Man Repeller

37

New Yorker Leandra Medine is one of the funniest and smartest fashion bloggers currently out there. Her blog The Man Repeller is about (as she puts it):

Outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.’

And may I just add that I am clearly clueless on what repels men? Clogs and shoulder pads UNattractive? I mean..

PS: Even the Copyright Infringement notice on the bottom of her blog is funny as hayl (but also a little bit intimidating so I politely added photo creds!):

DON’T STEAL MY BRAIN JUICE WITHOUT CREDITING ME, I OWN THIS SHIT. UNLESS YOU WANT ME TO SUE YOU. IN WHICH CASE, THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR FACILITATING MY OWNERSHIP OVER THE ENTIRE PROENZA SCHOULER S/S 2010 COLLECTION. I’M STILL NOT OVER IT.

PPS: Leandra was also featured on The Coveteur last month!
